Microsoft Agent Mode Expands Copilot to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with Real-Time Action
Page 9
Microsoft is introducing Agent Mode, a more capable iteration of Copilot embedded in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Built to command and edit content directly in documents rather than just respond to prompts, Agent Mode represents a shift from a largely reactive assistant to an action-oriented helper.
What’s new and why it matters
- Early Copilot relied on foundation models that weren’t powerful enough to command the apps themselves. As a result, Copilot tended to be a passive participant, answering questions but not reliably taking canvas-level action.
- Over the last year, advances in instruction-following, reasoning, and overall quality have improved how these models handle multi-step edits and preserve the user’s intent.
How it works in practice
- Users can watch the Copilot AI agent operate in real time via a new sidebar that displays every step the agent takes on a document, providing transparency into the process.
- In Excel, Agent Mode can apply changes directly within a workbook, including adding formulas and tables to achieve the desired outcome.
- In PowerPoint, the agent can refresh slides with up-to-date information while keeping the established template styling that businesses depend on.
Availability and rollout
- The new Copilot features are rolling out as the default experience for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers.
- They are also accessible to users on Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans.
In short, Agent Mode aims to make Copilot a more reliable, action-first assistant across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with real-time visibility into its steps and edits.
